I've been reading The Island at the Center of the World, about the Dutch history of NYC..
a few factoids from the book:
The Bronx comes from a farmer who settled there named Bronck. The land was called Bronck's farm.
Brooklyn was a small Dutch village that was originally named Breuckelein (sp?)
Yonkers was named after a Dutch "Jonker" (a term for a nobleman).
Who owned the land and it became called "The Jonker's land." He had a big saw mill on his property and that was the original of the Saw Mill River Parkway.
The team colors of the NY Knicks and the NY Mets have their origins in the origin colors of the Dutch colony at the time.

the word "cookies" as we use it, instead of the English biscuits...which they also use to refer to what we call cookies, comes from the Dutch for "little cakes."
cole slaw comes from the Dutch for "cabbage salad"
