Tolls would rise every four years and be extended to Route 440 as part of the financial restructuring plan Gov. Jon Corzine is expected to offer up in his State of the State speech today, according to individuals involved in crafting the plan.
The Star-Ledger has learned that any new or increased tolls proposed in the plan would not be collected until at least 2010, the year after Corzine would stand for re-election. A source with direct knowledge of the plan confirmed Statehouse reports of a 50 percent toll hike every four years mixed with annual cost of living increases.
That would mean the average Turnpike toll for a motorist paying in cash would rise from the current $1.92 to nearly $10 by 2022. [...]
The individuals involved in drawing up the plan said Corzine agreed to tolls on Route 440 -- five miles of highway between the New Jersey Turnpike and the Outerbridge Crossing to Staten Island -- because 30 percent to 40 percent of the motorists using the road are from out of state.

Re: Corzine's taxes begin to emerge
Wed, January 9, 2008 - 5:36 AMlowering taxes is just a scam that politicians pull to get elected.
these people don't care about us and they certainly don't care about political theories like smaller government.
All they care about is us being stupid enough to elect them, so that they can give some sweetheart deals to their friends and family.
taxes are fees.
we don't want our bridges to fall down? we need taxes. we need them for roads, for repairing our lovely NJ potholes, for all the various services that we actually need.
what these liars have succeeded in doing is cutting back our taxes a few hundred dollars. If you take $300 saved, by, say 3 million taxpayers...and put that $9 billion to work for us....that winds us being, oh, maybe $1000 or $1500 worth of services.
So, for sake of "saving" $300, we lose $1500. And these yokums up in the state house and Washington are laughing their heads off.
For that $300 saved, our kid is a class with 35 kids instead of 20. For the $300 saved, our towns are being patrolled by less officers. For that $300 saved, our town has less firemen, with less equipment. The list goes on. This is the depth of the scam these corrupt liars have pulled on us.
When some politician actually tries to get some funding into the state, more than likely, it is for some real need...like, say, some more state police to deal with security threats in a post 911 world.
